Girl from Ipanema, woman from Chicago

Yes, it’s been trashed by many a sub-standard lounge band, but the greatest bossa nova song of them all is still a thing of beauty. (Cue João Gilberto and Stan Getz.)  The Guardian has been doing its bit for the 50th anniversary of the very first performance, which actually pre-dates the most famous version. I’m 99.99 per cent sure the tune won’t make it into Patricia Barber’s set when she plays Ronnie Scott’s next month. After all, she’s darker and more enigmatic, and surely the best singer-pianist that most Brits have never heard of. Although the French love her she rarely shows her face in London. So you have been warned. Her revenge song is a very good place to start.
