I made several copies of my manuscripts, and made an arrangement through the post with Romain Rolland to send him my books; he was perfectly willing to forward them to some publishers in Paris… I posted him a first manuscript in four registered envelopes, not forgetting to inform the G.P.U that I had done so. All four envelopes were lost. I went to complain to the head of the secret police and he exclaimed, “Just see how deplorably the Post Office works! And then you say we’re exaggerating when we uncover sabotage!”
