The cars that almost killed London

With Boris Johnson attracting well-deserved praise for his notion of a cycle superhighway, it’s good to be reminded of an era when sane, well-meaning experts thought building a monumental grid of tarmac, known as the Ringways, was the only way of saving the city. (Robert Moses once had similar plans for New York.) Via BorisWatch, here’s an extract from BBC4’s “The Secret Life of the Motorway”, one of the most compelling programmes I’ve seen in years  — part nostalgia-fest, part horror story.
