I haven’t seen Matt Stone and Trey Parker’s musical yet, but Libby Purves’ Times review [£] raises some interesting questions. “Pretty racist” is her verdict on the Darkest Africa setting:
Stone and Parker do not even have the courtesy to invent a country, as Evelyn Waugh did in Black Mischief. They choose Uganda… [W]hile ostensibly giggling at Mormons, we are invited to join Broadway in its breezy global-dominating acceptance that Africans are either childishly gullible or mindlessly brutal.
The Telegraph’s Charlie Spencer doesn’t use the R-word, although he wasn’t impressed either.
