Copa do Mundo

I can just about remember watching the 1966 World Cup Final, but Mexico 1970 was the first tournament I followed all the way through. Lots of late nights, lots of fish and chips as my brother and I watched matches on our newfangled colour TV. And one final glimpse of the old Jules Rimet trophy before Carlos Alberto and his team took it home for good. (The new cup, introduced four years later, never quite seemed real to me. It still doesn’t.)  The final was majestic, and that last goal was the perfect climax. Listening to Five Live count down the greatest Brazilian World Cup goals this afternoon, I waited to see where it would be placed. Number One, as it turned out. Where else?
