Buika is back

As I write in my review [£] in today’s Sunday Times: “There isn’t a voice quite like hers.” The last time I saw Concha Buika perform live, at the Barbican almost a year ago, I couldn’t help wondering if she’d lost her way. Histrionics seemed to be crowding out the artistry. Could it be that she’s one of those rare artists who need the discipline of the recording studio? She’s certainly on vintage form on “Vivir Sin Miedo” (“To Live Without Fear”), the most audacious album of her career so far; it’s as intriguing a set, in its very different way,  as “El Ultimo Trago”, her piano-and-vocals collaboration with the great Cuban pianist Chucho Valdés. And as the new record contains English as well as Spanish lyrics, it surely ought to win her wider airplay in this country. She deserves it.
