I’m not exactly a member of Snarky Puppy’s fan club (here’s my review of the cult band’s recent, unbearably bombastic London concert) but there are some intriguing moments on the new album, which finds them blending into the background behind a series of high-power guests. Susana Baca, the great Peruvian singer is the pick of them all. Of course I would say that, wouldn’t I? That virtuosic but soulful guitarist Charlie Hunter joins in too. “Molino Molero”, a traditional song, comes from Baca’s fabulous debut for David Byrne’s Luaka Bop label, released nearly 20 years and one of the handful of masterpieces to have come my way in that time.
Btw, I’ve already linked to another Baca gem, “Mario Lando”.
