Have you heard the one about the Muslim comedian?

Not a night to remember. My review [£] of Shazia Mirza’s show at Soho Theatre:

She seems to want to have it both ways. When Shazia Mirza complains about being treated as a token brown face in an industry dominated by ultra-privileged white liberals she is making a shrewd point. The problem with her stand-up act is that much of her material, self-indulgent and second-rate, gets a pass precisely because of her background. She tells us how irritating it is when a BBC radio producer asks her to make a comment piece “more Muslim”, but does it occur to her that a white comic who told jokes as feeble as some of hers would be unlikely to get a phone call in the first place?
